Electricity: a podcasted novel by myke bartlett

1999

Aston Somerfield, casual smoker and part-time alcoholic, has come to London to find himself. He knows who he's looking for, he's seen him on the cover of the NME. Drawn across oceans by fame and fate, Aston is keeping his diary empty to make sure he's available. Won't commit to anything until it's everything.

London, however, has other ideas.

When a virtual stranger calls Aston a few hours before his death, fate catches up with him, derailing his barely-made plans. Amid a hundred boozy evenings and romantic deadends, a mystery unfurls.

Equally assisted and hindered by tremulous accountant Tom Hensley and dedicated loafer Steven Black, Aston uncovers a different London, one of murder, ghosts, dangerous emails and the second big bang.

As chaotic and random as the city it inhabits, Electricity gradually evolves into a mystery bigger than the universe itself. Being of a somewhat useless persuasion, Aston does his best to ignore it.

    Salmon & Dusk on Facebook

Sure, I should be recording 'My Chalk Outline', (find it here) but due to interference from noisy builders and the worlds yappiest dog, I've instead been spending my time setting up a Facebook group for The Terrible Business of Salmon & Dusk.

You can find it via the link below (you'll need to be logged in to your Facebook account):

The Terrible Business of Salmon & Dusk Facebook group

I'm hoping to use the group to keep anyone who's interested updated regarding the world of Salmon & Dusk. It's also a forum of sorts for anyone wanting to discuss 'How to Disappear Completely' or 'My Chalk Outline' (or, indeed, 'Electricity'). Go on, you know you want to!

Chapter 4: The Stowaway and the Ghosts

Travelling with another is never easy. Take Steven Black, the most irritating man Aston has ever met. Rather surprisingly, he's also become his best friend. From Perth to London to Amsterdam, the two entirely fail to hit it off, ultimately approaching violence over Backgammon. Despite this, they might just be of some use to each other.

In the meantime, Aston discovers there is more to Lauren than could have been guessed. Or is it less?

    ______________________________________

Apologies again for the delay! My sister is in town from interstate, so I simply haven't had the time to sit down and record what has ended up being a bumper chapter (82 minutes!)

Eagle-eyed readers may notice the title has changed from "The Stowaway and the Box" - a title I much preferred. The reason for this is that, for reasons I can't quite understand, there's no mention of a box in this chapter. Which is a shame really. I must have made an edit aeons ago and completely forgotten about it. The box in question will make its debut next week instead. Unreliable things, those boxes...

Chapter 5 should be up at the usual time. It should also be a good deal shorter than this week's, by way of compensation for the overrun. At this stage, unless I'm accidentally referring to items or events that play no part in the chapter, the title will be "The Same Deep Water As Me."

    Chapter 2: The Quiet Office

Tom Hensley, Aston's financially-minded flatmate, has a new job. He's been there two weeks and hopes soon to find out what it is. With a bit of luck, he'll work it out before the phonecalls threatening concrete boots start yielding deadly results. As usual, Aston is no help at all.

    Electricity: The Trailer!

After some seemingly endless mixing and jiggery pokery with suddenly vanishing monologues, a nice, long trailer for Electricity is now finally and properly online at http://electricity.podshow.com/

Alternatively, you can download the trailer directly here

At this stage, there will be two versions of Electricity:

    a) one which will eventually appear at Podiobooks featuring royalty-free music
    b) a "remixed" version which will be available a bit sooner at podshow featuring a top selection of music from 1999.

I hope you enjoy it! The book launches at podshow in June.
